JDLTC was born from real experience on the ground. Our parent brand, VAN TRIP JAPAN, rents campervans to foreign visitors every day. Through this work, we saw firsthand how confusing the license requirements are for international travelers — especially those from countries where a standard International Driving Permit (IDP) doesn't work in Japan.
Visitors from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, and Taiwan would arrive excited to explore Japan by road, only to discover at the rental counter that their IDP wasn't valid. They needed a JAF translation — but the official JAF process requires visiting an office in person, in Japan, with limited English support and processing times that don't work for short trips.
We knew there had to be a better way. So we built JDLTC — a simple online service that handles the entire JAF translation process for travelers, before they even leave home.
The Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) is the only organization authorized to issue official license translations in Japan. However, JAF's official application process has significant limitations for foreign travelers:
• The JAF website only works from within Japan — if you try to access certain services from overseas, you'll encounter restrictions.
• In-person visits required — the traditional process requires visiting a JAF office in Japan, which isn't practical for travelers planning their trip from abroad.
• Limited language support — the application process is primarily in Japanese.
• Processing time — even within Japan, the process takes 1–2 weeks, which can be too slow for visitors on short trips.
