The Short Answer: No
Unfortunately, if your driver's license was issued in Indonesia, you cannot legally drive in Japan as a tourist. Japan does not recognize driver's licenses from Indonesia, and it does not recognize IDPs from Indonesia because it is not a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention.
| Status | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Indonesian License | Not legally recognized for tourist driving in Japan. |
| Translations | No bilateral agreement exists, so a translation is invalid. |
Are there any exceptions?
There are no exceptions for tourist rentals. You cannot use a translated license, and you cannot use an IDP from Indonesia. The only way to drive in Japan is to hold a license from a 1949 Geneva Convention signatory country, or from one of the special bilateral agreement countries (like Germany, Switzerland, or Taiwan).
We highly recommend utilizing Japan's world-class public transport network (Shinkansen, express trains) or booking private tour charters to explore the countryside safely.
