Can I drive in Japan with a Thai Driver's License? (2026 Rules)

The Short Answer: 1949 Geneva IDP Required

If your driver's license was issued in Thailand, you can drive in Japan, but your original license alone is not enough. You must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention.

Required Document Important Note
Original Thai License Must be physical and valid.
1949 Geneva Convention IDP Must be strictly issued under the 1949 Geneva rules. 1968 Vienna IDPs are NOT valid.
Your Passport Required for identification and tourist visa verification.

Strict Enforcement of 1949 Geneva Convention

Japan is extremely strict about IDPs. They only accept permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention (which are common in Europe and parts of Asia) are strictly invalid.

Make sure to check the cover of your permit. It must state: "Convention on Road Traffic of 19 September 1949". If it lists the 1968 convention, you will be rejected at the rental car counter.

Can I use a translation instead?

No. For Thailand license holders, a Japanese translation is not accepted as a substitute. You must obtain your 1949 IDP from your home country before you arrive in Japan. If you are already in Japan without a 1949 IDP, you cannot legally rent or drive a car.
