The Beauty and Danger of Hokkaido in Winter
Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost island, famous for its world-class powder snow (Japow). Renting a car is the best way to explore Niseko, Furano, and Biei. However, driving in Hokkaido between November and April requires extreme caution, preparation, and specific equipment.
The Golden Rule: Snow Tires (Studless Tires)
It is legally and practically impossible to drive in Hokkaido in winter with standard summer tires. You must ensure your rental car is equipped with Studless Snow Tires (スタッドレスタイヤ). Fortunately, almost all rental car agencies in Hokkaido automatically equip their fleets with snow tires from November to April at no extra charge. However, if you are renting a car in Tokyo and driving it up to Hokkaido, you must explicitly request and pay for snow tires.
4WD vs 2WD
Whenever possible, specifically request a 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) vehicle. A 4WD car combined with studless tires offers significantly better traction on icy intersections and snowy mountain passes.
Winter Driving Safety Tips
- Black Ice: Intersections in Hokkaido are notorious for "black ice"—ice polished to a mirror finish by the friction of passing tires. Brake very early and very gently.
- Whiteouts: Blizzards can cause sudden whiteouts where visibility drops to zero. If this happens, turn on your hazard lights, slow down to a crawl, and look for the downward-pointing red arrows suspended above the road. These arrows indicate where the edge of the road is when everything is buried in snow.
- Wiper Blades: When parking outside overnight, always pull your windshield wipers up and away from the glass. If left down, they will freeze to the windshield and break when you try to use them.
