Why You Must Rent a Car in Okinawa
Unlike Tokyo or Osaka, Okinawa's public transportation system is severely limited. Aside from a single monorail line (the Yui Rail) in Naha City, getting around relies entirely on slow public buses. To truly experience the pristine beaches of the north, the Churaumi Aquarium, and the hidden cafes of the coast, renting a car in Okinawa is an absolute necessity.
Renting a Car at Naha Airport
Naha Airport (OKA) is surrounded by massive rental car hubs. When you arrive, you will take a free shuttle bus from the terminal to your rental agency (Toyota, Orix, Times, OTS). Because Okinawa is a high-volume tourist destination, you MUST book your rental car months in advance, especially during the summer and Golden Week.
The Okinawa Expressway
Okinawa has one major toll road: the Okinawa Expressway, which runs vertically from Naha in the south to Nago in the north. The speed limit is generally 80 km/h. It is highly recommended to rent an ETC card to breeze through the toll gates, as the cash lanes can get backed up with tourists.
Unique Okinawan Driving Quirks
- Y-Plates: You will see many cars with "Y" or "A" on their license plates. These belong to members of the US military stationed in Okinawa. Give them plenty of space, as young recruits may be inexperienced drivers.
- Slippery Roads: Okinawa's roads are made with a special crushed limestone asphalt to resist the intense sun. However, when it rains, this limestone becomes incredibly slick and dangerous. Drive much slower than usual during tropical downpours.
- Bus Lanes: In Naha City, the far-left lane is strictly reserved for buses during morning and evening rush hours. If you drive in this lane, you will be heavily fined.
