JAF Processing Times (In-Person vs. Online)
Historically, the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) was the primary avenue for translations.
- Applying to the JAF yourself: this only becomes possible once you are in Japan. Since April 2025 it is a web-only application, in Japanese, reachable only from a Japanese network and delivered to a Japanese address. However, branches are often located far from tourist centers, and wait times can vary significantly.
- JAF Online Application: Applying through the JAF website typically takes up to 2 weeks for processing, and you need a Japanese address for physical delivery, making it highly impractical for tourists already on the move.

How the Digital Delivery Works
Once your translation is complete, JDLTC emails you a secure, certified PDF. You do not need to wait for physical mail. You simply walk into any 7-Eleven or FamilyMart in Japan, scan the QR code on the copy machine, and print your official document for about 20 yen.
